Si vis pacem, Para bellum-
If you want peace, prepare for war.

i'd rather be alive and paranoid than dead and skeptical.

"Paranoia is just a heightened sense of reality."

Faith in Government defies both History and Reason.

'A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have.' ........ Thomas Jefferson

"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their money, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them (around the banks), will deprive the people of their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." - Thomas Jefferson

I really wish i didnt need to write this but feel that at least i might help you get a fair shot a getting prepaired. NOTE I post this information here so that you can further educate yourself on these matters.

Create and get into the habit of carrying a B.O.B. Bug Out Bag. As well as EDC(every day carry). The B.O.B. needs to be kept in your car when you go out and somewere that you can pick it up and go in a hurry in your house, let's start with the EDC.

EDC(Every Day Carry) is basicly things you shouldnt leave the house without IE: Knife, compass, cell phone, wallet, flashlight, multitool, map ETC.Anyone serious about survival should carry these items with them every single day when they leave home. You never know when you may need these items. Now thats the basics you need to have, feel free to adjust for more personal needs.

skin_fetch.jpg

Now that you know what a EDC is lets look at its grown up version, a B.O.B.(Bug Out Bag). This is your GTFOOD(get The Fuck Out Of Dodge)/WTSHTF(when the shit hits the fan) bag for you to simply grab and go. The sole purpose of it is for you to store in it all that you can(safely) carry with you when and if you ever have to bug out. Now idealy you will be able to carry what you and yours need to bug out to a more secure location. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is trying to simply bug out and live out of your pack. There is no way in hell that the average joe will be able to survive long term on what can be put in a B.O.B.. If you are highly experienced with wilderness living, know how to rough it, find, capture and prepare wild game and plants you will fare much better, so unless you posses said skills have at least 2 locations scouted and stocked for your arival and long or short term stay.

That being said, be awere that in a SHTF situation you can trust no one, yes it sounds like some paranoid corny X-Files stuff but there is much wisdom in the idea. Just think, what would you do to keep you and your family safe and taken care of anything and everything right? thought so, and guess what you aint the only one. that is just what everyone will be doing. If they have no family with them, they will look out for #1 first  that being themselves. Your best freind may have some food when you are starving and he/she wont share, would you be prepared to fight them for it, how bout kill them over it? Scoff if you will but it just may come down to that, as i said, Trust no one, family, friends, strangers, government, military etc. Another bit of wisdom is Allways Be Prepared, anyone who was a scout growing should remeber that little gem. Again may sound dumb but its one of those pieces of wisdom you need to take to heart, that applies to a B.O.B, to car maintenance to anything else you can think of.

Now, the following is a basic outline of the basics you need to carry in your B.O.B. and on your person in a Bug_Out situation. For a good pack avoid civillian packs, start with a military pack, best one is the ALICE(All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) Pack, they are lightweight and very durable. For a B.O.B. they are a very good start. Keep in mind also that in a B.O.S(Bug Out Situation) that if you wander around looking like Rambo, Mad Max or like the Military folks will either avoid you like the plauge or swarm you in fear/anger. Military surplus gear is great and often times beats any civilian gear but dont relie on it. Also aquire as manu survival PDF's, Books, Articles and manuels as you can and become very well versed with the content and try to keep copies in your B.O.B. but not if they take up too much space. One last tip, Use and test any and all objects you plan to use in a B.O.B., you dont want to be in the middle of the wilderness and find out you are too dumb to use a magnesium fire starter or that you are alergic to the food in your MRE's.

Good Luck.

Water purifiacation tablets-at least 3 bottles. used to purify drinking water and kill bacteria.

PotassiumIodine antiradiation pills-used to block absorbtion of radiation by the thyroid gland take as many as you can get your hands on

First Aid Kit-Here you must carefully balance between space and use. the main things are guaze, anispetic, scissors, ointments for rashes and other, medical gloves, penicillan, syrenges, asprin as well as snake bite kits, bee sting kits if your allergic. Just use common sense and read up on first aid.

Sewing Kit-Usefull for mending clothing, stiching up wounds, sewing up holes in tents, tarps, sleeping bags etc.

Knives-Get at least 5 good folding lock blade style knives. Why so many you ask well, blades break in the dark one may fall out of your pocket on the ground and you dont notice for hours not to mention the multitude of daily uses, cutting strips of cloth for a tourniqueit, self defense, carving wood for skewers etc.......  Also get a good buck knife or fighting knife for self defense.

Point is its better to have many and not need it than to need one and not have it.

FlashLight-again same as with knives and guns better to be safe than sorry. get severel good LED lights, MAGLITE is a good place to go. get a few in varying sizes, smaller ones can be mounted using a clip. Also try Surefire.

Headlamp-mainly used by cave exploerers, they fit on your head via adjustable straps. get one with a red, blue and normal light filters, preferably with LED lights.

Batteries-Dont go get the cheapies that wear out in a day but there is no need to spring  $30 for a 4 pack of AA's either. Try and get recgargable batteries and have enough for what ever needs them.

Hand Crank Radio/Generator-Let me explain, this is a mid sized radio that runs off a hand crank generator. Most models have a feture to recharge batteries manuely, plug in a cell phone and provide light.

Duct Tape-At minimum take 2 full rolls. used for a restraint, cover up a hole in fabric, tape a splint, tape together objects to conserve space etc. Duct tape as 1,001 uses  and odds are you can thing of a few more, just get a few rolls, i dont care what color just get it.

Lighters-A good zippo windproof lighter and a few cheap Bic lighters are a good start as they are pretty easy to get and take up very little space. A better one is the Firestorm-Storm proof lighter as its water proof when sealed and is good for 80,000 uses. though id get a few of both for good measure and dont forget the extra fuel.

Water Proof Matches-You can buy these or make them by dipping match heads into melted wax. very light wieght even with a few thousand they take up almost no space, may also a a usefull bartering item.

Magnesium Firestarter-a solid magnesium block that has a stricking flint on it. all you have to do is shave off a few strips of the magnesium block and strike the meatl bar on top with a knife blade along it to create a shower of sparks that can instantly ignite a 5400 deg fire.Very basic, a must for any survival kit.

Tinder-Dryer lent, cotton balls dipped in vasoline, a oil soaked rag cut into strips, basicly things that will catch fire and hold it ot get a fire going. This way you can make a firestarter last longer by not using the magnesium everytime, you only need for the tinder to catch a spark and then use the fire to start a campfire for warmth or cooking.

Boots-Unless you live in a small town or can Bug out quickly odds are you will be on foot alot. Now sneakers may be more cofortable but they wont hold up on rugged terrain. work boots are ok but they are a bit too heavy for moving quickly  (trust me on this, you ever tried running long distance in heavy work boots? Well i have and it will wear you out fast). I have two pairs of boot i wear on a daily basis the newer pair are Magnum stealth 2 boots. very light, breathable, ankle support and just comfterble. the other pair is Biltrite Combat boots i got surpluss. they havent been made since the 1970's.

While the magnum boots  are good for every day wear, they are made of nylon and soft leather and they lack a steel toe cap. The combat boots are a little less comfy the are made of tough hardend water proofed leather and they have a steel toe. I got the magnums for about $70 and the Biltrite for free though they havent been made since the 70's. Both are excellent but it all depends on the terain you will be on. check this site for ideas,

http://www.combatboots.com/

Gloves-you need gloves. for lugging a pack around, comeing in contact with people, working etc. Keep at least 3 pairs of gloves, the first would be a pair of  work gloves,  just some good leather work gloves. 2d would be a pair of tactical nomex/kevlar blended gloves. Provides cut protection and flame protection, i wouldnt so much as touch a person with out them on. Third, a light pair of grip gloves. the ones with girp beads on the fingers and palms, these would be the ones i wear by defualt. As with all the gear on here wear them, try them get used to them.

Cell Phone-everyone has one nowadays and it would be a good idea to use it in the early days of a bug out, though after about a week i would dismantle it or cease to use it. Dont waste your cash on some expensive one though, just get a basic one.

2 way radios-get a set for your self as well as freinds and family. good one have a range of up to 26 miles and multiple channels. many models have regargable batteries as well.

Parachute Cord-get at least a 50 yard strand per person. can be used to rapelling, a hammock, snare, ETC.

Handguns-A pistol or revolver in a .22LR, 9MM, .45 and .38 special. the .22LR is probly pound for pound the best ammo you can get your hands on. it works in rifles, pistols and revolvers and has all most no kick making it great for anyone to be able to use. its also about 2 cents per round, compare to 24 cents per round of 9mm. .45 ACP is for pure stopping power, it will drop a man dead at medium ranges should you need it for that purpose and has great stopping power even on a vest. the .38 special would be my back up just in case i need to get off a shot and dont have time to reload. if you have the cash id get a .357 or even a .500 but i would hold my breath on that.

Ammo-There are 3 main types of ammo you want to stock up on.

.22LR
.9mm

12 guage shells.

those are the 3 most common ammo types in the world. I would get 10,000 rounds of .22lr, and 2,000 each of 12 guage and 9mm. it will be heavy but well worh it. odds are that when it gets to the situation in which youll need this all, our current currency will have no value whatsoever. you can use these rounds as a bartering tool for tradeing.

Sleeping bag/Tent-For a tent get a small tent made for 2 at the most. ive found a few that fit 2 and weigh just 3 pounds. you can tie the tent to the pack. as for a sleeping bag, depending on were you live and are planning to bug out to id get a 3-4 season rated sleeping bag. also id get one rated for at lead -35'f below zero.

Folding Trench Shovel-an invaulable tool. most fold to small enough to fit in a cargo pant pocket. use for digging a fire pit, a shelter, ETC. each member of your party needs one of these.

Ax-No not the body spary, a solid wood or synthetic handled ax or hatchet. In addition to being a good weapon, you will likely need it to fall trees for shelter and wire wood no B.O.B. should be with out one.

Emergency Blanket-more commonly called stadium blankets, you know the giant silver blankets you see at foot ball games in the winter. They fold to the size of your palm and bottle in warmth, plus ive found them for about 3.25-3.75 apeice.

Wool Blanket-or just a good heavy blanket, can be used as a mat, shaw, cover, makeshift tent, door way closure etc.

M.R.E.'S, Meals Ready To Eat. Dehydrated air tight pre-packedged meals used often by the military. all they require is water then heat them up or eat cold. they have shelf lifes of nearly ten years in some cases and weigh only a few ounces. Also, check out Hooah Bars

Drinking water-This is probably the most important item on the list. You can last a couple of weeks with little or no food but only about 5-6 days without water. If you go buy my guide lines above for a pack with a 3 liter bladder you will want to refill the baldder every day to every other day depending on the ammount of physical activity you par take in day to day. And dont forget to boil the water and purify it to kill as many parasites as possible.

Optional: Stuff i would put in a B.O.B. but you dont have to:

Gas Mask-Far as im concerned this is a necesity for any bug out bag. There is a good chance that the need to bug out may be a dirty bomb, or a nuclear explosion on US soil. Even if youre 100 miles away from ground zero particles can travel through the air and if you breathe them in if you dont die, you will most likely become violently ill.
When shoping for a gas mask you need to ask yourself, how much is my life worth to me. beware of cheap masks as they are often out-dated or immpossible to find filters for. go here for some help,
http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/mask-gas.htm

Tactical Goggles-another must have item.  good ones have shatter-proof lense's, and provide UV protection. also good for keeping debrie out of your eyes.

Night Vision Goggles-perfect for finding your way at nite with little risk of giving away your posistion like a flashlight would. A bit expensive but well worth it.

Tactical Batton-a batton is a great tool for self defense. you may find yourself in a confrintation with a fellow survivor and they are trying to pick a fight over say food or water. Now you could shoot them or stab them but there is no need to use a blade or gun when you have a third option. A collapsable batton ranges in length from 16inches to 31 inches depending on the model. They are made from alluminum alloy, very light but damn near indestructable. Not to mention the hurt like hell. you can get one for around $60-$80.
http://www.asp-net.com/

Alaska Bear Pepper Spray-This stuff is 50% stronger than what the cops and military use. Designed to stop a grizzly or really and animal, in its tracks if used right. It weighs about 9oz's and contains 9 shots. Shelf life of 3 years minumum. kind of expensive but worth every damn penny.
http://defensedevices.com/bearpepspray.html

Mess kit and Untinsels-Just a basic two piece GI mess  kit. Just a tray and small pot for cooking and a 3 piece untinsel set, knife, fork, spoon. All stainless steel just pick a set up at your local surpluss shop.

Small hatchet/Machete-Basicly for cutting wood and clearing brush for a path, shelter, fire wood etc. also either can be used in self defense. id carry one of each.

12 gauge Pump action shotgun-just get one. Good for hunting, self defense and any thing else you need it for. 12g shells can be found anywere at a decent price and come in many styles.
00 buck shot
Fletchette rounds
Slug
and a few other rounds.
best models in my book are the Mossberg 500, Remington 870 and Benelli M4. all 3 can be customized for the perfect fit so to say. id get a tactical light and good sling regardless.

Also, i would recomend stcking at least 1,000 rds of ammo split between your bug out retreat and on you. it could be used a currency plus theres no telling how long you may need to stay off the grid. you dont want to run  out of ammo when you may need it the most.

Rifles-I would carry two rifles with me. Without question the first would be my Remington .22 bolt action . ive shot with it for years and never had a single problem, thats to say out of the 5000 rds ive put through it the ive had maybe 10 times were a case didnt eject or somthing minor. Like i said further up .22 ammo is the cheapest on the planet and takes up little room, in my ALICE pack i can fit 5,000 rds with ease. plus i can dual load my rifle and pistol also dont forget a good scope on it. A .22 is great for any small game animal IE Rabbit, fox, cyote, racoon etc. Plus .22 rifles can be shot all day and you only have to do minimal mantianence for cleaning.

The scond rifle ill leave up to you, ill leave it up to you and your cash. Only other thing is know the local animals were you will be bugging out to, dont want to walk into grizzly country with just a .22.

Elbow and Knee pads. Now, these are basiclly explained in the name. they protect for elbows and knees when moving about. There are two main kinds, Tactical hard shell and Neoprene injected. the neoprene ones are made to be more comfortable than anything. the hardshell might not be as comfy but offer better protection. i would go with the hardshell style but its up to you. Again, blackhawk is your friend here.
http://www.blackhawk.com/category1.asp?D=D0085&S=S0737&G=&C=&N=1&pricestart=&priceend=

Tommy cooker with trioxane fuel-a tommy cooker is a small box the size of a ciggartee pack that folds out to a small stove with 2 legs for resting a small pot etc on. it fits in your shirt pocket. and trioxane fuel, small little light bars that burn for about 8 minuetes and burn with only a few sparks. its pretty cheap so pick it up.

Post Mortem:
Ok, as i said above the first set of items are mandatory in some fashion, the second is a list of optional items. For stuff like clothing, hygiene item, specific food item ETC i leave up to you and your best judgement. Just scour your local army surplus  shops and you can find most of the items listed, I would advise that if you are planing on bugging out with a group you make sure everyone has the basics and knows where to meet up and that each member is capeable of pulling there share of the load. if someone is a lazy SOB that has never done manuel labor in there life i sure as hell wouldnt bug out with em'. A bug out is no time to be un-organized and chaoticly running about, the only thing that will acomplish is you and others winding up deas or injured. Also., keep this in mind if you are stocking up and preparing there is no need to go around telling everyone in earshot about it or the extent to wich you are prepared. In Sit_X those who are without will be coming to YOU for a handout and will be ready to take you out to get what they want, think im lying? Just look at the aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans, looting, anrachy, chaos. Keep this in mind as you prepare, good luck, i just hope you and i never need to use the information above.
